DGN Felix Stubbs Acceptance Speech

District Governor Vance Lewis, District Governor Elect Jeremy Hurst, Past District Governors, District Governor Nominee Paul Brown, and Rotarians all, Good Morning.

Firstly, I want to thank PRID Barry Rassin and PDG John Robertson for their persistence in ensuring that I join Rotary, a short twelve years ago, after turning down numerous invitations to join - for almost as many years. I also thank PDG Dick McCombe who pushed me into Rotary leadership beyond the club. Today, I can truly say that my commitment to, and passion for, Rotary has grown stronger each of these twelve years.

I try to encourage as many persons as I can, to join Rotary and I tell them that this organization gives one the opportunity to move from a life of success, however that is defined, to a life of significance. I paraphrase President Tanaka’s words when he said that being a good Rotarian means being the best. It means doing your best and being the best you can be. It means working as hard as you can – not for yourself, but for others. It means achieving as much as you can, to make other people’s lives better.

In the dictionary, best is defined as excelling all others. In Rotary, best means something different. It means bringing Service Above Self into all of our thinking. It means looking at our own effort, not in terms of what it costs us, but in terms of what it can give. In this way, we are inspired so much more. It is our job to see that our Rotary Services are our best.  And so, it is in this context that I humbly accept, with the pride and the dignity it deserves, the confidence you have bestowed in me to one day lead this great District 7020.

I stand here, not because of any great thing that I did, but as recognition of the many fine achievements of my Rotary family in the Bahamas and it is my honour to represent them all. And what would I be without the “Greatest little Club in the Galaxy”, the Rotary Club of Nassau Sunrise and our fine leader, president Mario Smith? Thank you Rotary Bahamas.

In this, our beloved District 7020, I will have the distinct advantage of standing on the shoulders of so many great leaders before me. For that I am grateful. I am also comforted by the knowledge that I have all of you, 7020 Rotarians, to support me. For what is the 7020 DG without the 7020 Rotarians?  I am also fortunate to have the support of my friend and confidante, Carla, who is my right hand. She is not only as passionate about Rotary as I am, but has worked professionally in four of our ten countries already. That has got to be of some advantage to me.

So, on behalf of both of us, I thank you all and we pledge to do our utmost to maintain the high standards that District 7020 is known for.

Thank you and God bless Rotary.
